It certainly can be a tempestuous period of life having to wear braces. On average, a person may have to endure this arduous journey for a good couple of years of their lives. So it’s not only down to what is going to be best, but also what you can afford, and what is going to be easiest to wear, both physically and psychologically. A ‘couple of years’ treatment is loosely based on the old, metallic fixed style of braces, that are suitable when you have a tight budget to work with, but, by nature, difficult to clean. They also look quite ungainly too. But do some research and you will find that braces have moved on radically. The new style of fixed brace works faster and looks better. Then there’s the world of removable, slick-looking aligners. More expensive yes, but they work so fast, are discreet in the mouth, with the extra advantage of being removable, enabling you to keep up your oral hygiene. Some of these radical new designs can even work as fast as 6 weeks-6 months. And we are all different; one type of aligner/brace may work for you, but not for the next person, which is why it’s important to ensure you discuss your program with your dentist or orthodontist before hand to get the treatment that is best for you and your teeth.
